WHAT WE TEACH
At Ivey League MMA, we teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Judo, Boxing and Sombo. We focus on all areas of self defense because you need to be able to fight standing as well as on the ground. The core programs we teach are Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ, is a ground fighting style that focuses on joint locks and choke holds to subdue your opponent and also teaches you to stay in great position which is an absolute key to self defense. With Muay Thai style kickboxing, you will learn to use your whole body to strike with like a weapon. punches just like you would see in Boxing but then add in kicks, knees and elbows and you have a truly complete style of stand up. Now, we take the BJJ and Muay Thai as we just described and combine it with the leg locks of Sombo, throws of Judo, takedowns of Wrestling and give you have Ivey League MMA’s style of hand to hand combat. Our training systems have been proven time and time again and we recommend them to everyone including men, women, and children.
“Danny Will Give You the Tools You Need to Succeed “
As a small female (5’2” and 114 lbs), I can’t stress enough the benefits of BJJ for self defense. The confidence and awareness you gain from BJJ can’t be found anywhere else (trust me…I’ve tried 3 other “traditional” martial arts without the same success). I began my BJJ training elsewhere, but when I was introduced to Lloyd Irvin’s Martial Arts Academy I immediately recognized the uniqueness of this program and switched over.
I consider myself fortunate to have had a decorated BJJ player and accomplished BJJ instructor like Danny Ives in my corner! Danny exemplifies all the necessary qualities of an exceptional coach. He has an incredible amount of technical knowledge and is patient, focused and detailed in his explanations. Danny will give you the tools you need to succeed and then encourage and challenge you to get there!!

BEGINNERS BEWARE
If you’re a beginner to Mixed Martial Arts, I must warn you about a few things. Most importantly you should know that not all schools are created equally, and it is very important that you make an educated decision before picking a school.
Most Mixed Martial Arts schools just throw beginner students to the wolves the first week they have started training. Your orientation to MMA, BJJ or Muay Thai is getting your butt kicked and handed to you by more advanced students. In reality, you might as well start a full blown conditioning program before joining a MMA school because if you’re not in shape while attending most schools, you’re going to have a really hard time. On top of that, one dirty little secret that no one at these schools tell you is that your going to learn whatever the instructor decides to teach that day. I mean in all forms of education, sports progression, or any form of higher learning educators/instructors have very detailed finely tuned curriculums to guarantee that a student learns the required material for their level that they are at. The sad fact is that most MMA schools don’t teach from a curriculum. I’ve heard stories of some school lying to students telling them that they did have a curriculum for the class but were never able to produce it. And don’t dare ask what you will be learning today, this week, next week, this month or this year, because in all honesty they have no clue at all what they are going to teach. You keep coming to class and if you’re lucky a few years down the road you may get your first belt. The problem is you’ll never know what you needed to do to achieve that belt. And if you ask you’ll probably hear something like “You Have To Be Able To Beat All Of The White Belts” or “You Have To Win Some Tournaments”.
This is sad but very true. Fortunately for you, I have the solution and it’s one of the reasons our students are so happy and we have people from all over the country moving to Maryland to train with me.
I’ve created the ultimate MMA program for the true beginner. Regardless of your physical condition or level of experience the White Belt Basics Program is designed for the beginner. Read on for more information about our superior training program.
Why train at Ivey League Mixed Martial Arts?
The answer is simple…
If you are truly interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Submission Wrestling, Muay Thai or Mixed Martial Arts training, or getting in the best shape of your life through martial arts, then you have found the right place.
OUR SCHOOL is lead by superior instructors with competition-tested experience and the highest level of knowledge. There are many schools claiming to be able to train you in Mixed Martial Arts but the majority of these schools lack credibility. How can you trust an instructor that has never been tested or whose students have never been tested? “I Highly Recommend Danny Ives as a Coach!”
I highly recommend Danny Ives as a coach. He has played a very significant role in my growth as a Mixed Martial Artist and was my first real jiu jitsu instructor. Throughout my time in the IFL and now the UFC I have used many principles and techniques he taught me, which included me being awarded two submission of the night honors in the IFL as well as two IFL World Team titles. I recently just won my UFC debut by submission also, and alot of it goes back to my time spent studying under Danny in the past. To this day I still give Danny phone calls when I have technique questions. I owe alot to him as an instructor and friend.

“If I Had To Choose One Word To Describe Danny Ives It Would Be Excellence.” |
![]() |
|
My Name is Bernard Edwards and I’ve been a member of the US military for nine years. In all my years of learning and being instructed I have never met such a competent and complete instructor, inside or outside of the ring as Danny Ives. If I had to choose one word to describe Danny Ives it would be excellence. I have trained under Danny Ives for over a year and his approach of striving to be the best you can be is contagious. Whether he is teaching, training, or competing, Danny Ives always works with the intention of doing his best. Danny is a very genuine human being who wants not only the best for himself, but the best for those associated with him. Care for students, friends, and family is always a priority of his. Furthermore, he creates an outstanding atmosphere for learning which can be attributed to his exceptional character and positive attitude. If you are looking to be the best grappler, MMA fighter, or just get in the best shape of your life, Danny Ives is the man for the job. Bernard Edwards |

Don’t Confuse Us with Other “MMA” Gyms
At Team Lloyd Irvin, we teach REAL Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Self-Defense. While we do specialize in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we also have have classes that focus on Muay Thai Kickboxing and wrestling.
Now don’t confuse us with other “MMA” gyms… most gyms that claim to teach MMA are really just grapplers that fight.
What do I mean by that? There are many incredible jiu-jitsu grapplers that have never done a day of formal kickboxing in their life! And they have such a confidence in their martial arts style, that they are willing to fight in MMA competitions – yet have never trained with proper coaching in striking. So now in their own gyms, when they are preparing for their fight, they engage in sparring sessions… what sort of quality striking can you expect? To each their own… I have no problem with that… my problem is when these same guys start advertising themselves as Mixed Martial Arts schools… well, it is not MY problem… it is YOUR problem if you join up with them!
Mixed Martial Arts, or fighting in general, can be grouped into three areas:
1) Striking (i.e. Muay Thai kickboxing)
2) Takedowns (i.e. wrestling)
3) Ground Grappling (i.e. Brazilian jiu-jitsu)
Sadly, most “MMA” schools are severely lacking proper training and credentials in all three groups
… you may find a head instructor that is a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt but has no credentials in kickboxing or wrestling (even worse, sometimes they don’t even have credentials in Jiu-Jitsu!)
…or you will find a gym with talented strikers but no jiu-jitsu black belt present
… or often you will find a “MMA” school that doesn’t have an expert in any of the three areas I just described! A jack of all trades but a master of none!
At Team Lloyd Irvin, we teach 3 styles of fighting, BJJ, Muay Thai kickboxing, and Wrestling. We will break down all three systems and help you to put them together so that you can be a truly complete Martial artist.
Ivey League MMA vs Most “MMA” & “Self-Defense” Schools
STRIKING
We Offer: World Class Striking — Our kickboxing coaches Danny Ives and Jason Ferral (amongst other Ivey League fighters) have been coached and trained extensively for years under world renowned trainer Pat Miletich and Jose Villarisco. Pat Miletich is a former UFC Champion and trainer of 4 world class UFC Champions. Jose is a US National Muay Thai Champion and World Silver Medalist at the World Muay Thai Championships. Our coaches have learned from the best and have applied it successfully in their own professional fights!
THEY Offer: Mediocre Striking — A lot of MMA gyms have decorated and proven jiu-jitsu practitioners; however, their striking is often mediocre at best. They spend years and years developing their submissions but just a few months to a year learning striking from a non-qualified coach… and then they pass it on to you!
TAKEDOWNS
We Offer: World Class Takedowns — You will find amazing wrestlers and judo practitioners at Ivey League. Ivey League is known for possessing very strong takedowns and its instructors have utilized them against the world’s best submission wrestlers! Ivey League Head Instructors learned to wrestle from top American wrestlers such as John Trenge, David Nakasone, and Mike Whitehead to name a few! Our very own Chales Cherry is a black belt in Judo!
They Offer: Weak Takedowns — Unfortunately, a lot of grapplers learn their takedowns from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu… and any educated grappler can tell you that BJJ has weak takedowns – their specialty is once the fights hits the ground… not before! Just watch their classes, their advanced students begin all their submission matches from their knees! This is a practice only done by beginners at Ivey League – all our students with over three months training begin from their feet. And if a MMA school does have strong takedowns – sometimes they end up not having good jiu-jitsu… or bad striking.
GRAPPLING
We Offer: World Class Ground Grappling — We have two certified Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belts as part of our team of Instructors and both are known worldwide for their victories on the mat. Danny Ives has been instrumental in shaping modern Jiu-Jitsu in America. Carlos Cantina was one of the top rated heavyweight competitors on the east coast for years until retiring from competition to focus on training students. Check out our instructor’s page for more details on our accoplishments or the blog for up-to-date results from our competitive team of grapplers and fighters. We dont just rest on our laurels, we continually prove our grappling skills at tournaments from the local to international level.
They Offer: Poor Ground Grappling — It is rare to find quality ground grappling. Old, out-dated, and ineffective jiu-jitsu skills are what many non-competitive grapplers practice and teach. Anyone can attend a two-hour seminar and claim to be masters of the sport. Don’t be fooled! Jiu-jitsu is an evolving sport that requires innovation and dedication to meeting new challenges. Also keep in mind though, there are still some MMA schools with non-qualified grapplers… and more will be popping up soon with the popularity of the UFC on the rise.
FIGHTING
We Offer: World Class Fighting — What good is knowing striking, takedowns, and ground grappling if you can’t put it together! At Ivey League, our head instructors are decorated professional fighters with titles earned in the ring or cage. They have been hit in the face before and know what works and doesn’t work in a real fight – no theories, just proven facts that they can vouch for themselves. Our instructors can teach you what to expect as the adrenaline goes through your body and how to handle real fatigue as it sets in during a real confrontation – from their own firsthand experience.
They Offer: Mediocre or Non-Existent Fight Experience — If you have been reading this report, then you understand that hardly any schools are qualified in the three major areas of fighting… which means they are not fully qualified to teach true mixed martial arts or complete self defense… period. Be careful with the instructors who possess certifications under respected fighters but have not entered the cage or ring themselves! People like this, in my opinion, are completely nonqualified to teach MMA or self defense. It would be like taking swimming lessons from an instructor who has never jumped in the water himself! Knowing that this instructor was taught on a chalk board by a swimming Olympic Gold Medalist wouldn’t make me feel any more comfortable about his abilities! Furthermore, what does that tell you about his commitment to learning fighting and self defense? Fighting and self-defense are not all about techniques – it is also very mental… and someone who has never fought is missing out on a big piece of it. Remember, instructors with only competition grappling experience… have ZERO fight experience! They are not the same! They know the difference, that is why they have only competed in grappling!
FOR BEGINNERS
We Offer: A Structured Beginner’s Only Course — When you start out at Ivey League, you will be going through a special beginner’s only course that lasts about two to three months. In this class, you will be learning from an organized curriculum that balances striking, takedowns, and ground grappling. The classes are designed to work at a pace that beginner’s can absorb. The beginner’s class also takes into account that you may be totally out of shape – one of its principal designs is to get you into good shape and allow you to train harder in the next level.
They Offer: Straight to the Wolves — Many martial art programs mix you in with the regular class on your first day! Just think about it… how can someone teach a class of people who have been training for two to three years… and then teach you your first class at the same time? That is like getting a calculus and algebra class in one room and trying to teach both at the same time! Either the advanced guys are missing out or the beginners are missing out…
SAFETY
We Offer: Student Safety — A common misconception about MMA training is that to learn effective MMA, you have to get into wild and crazy sparring matches. FALSE. At Ivey Lague, most of our students have families and jobs and can’t afford to leave the gym with black eyes! The grappling and sparring that is done at Ivey League is done with utmost control and in only when you are ready. Your first sparring sessions take place after the instructor determines you’re ready and in the beginning you would only be sparring with an instructor or advanced student, so that you can get comfortable. The idea is to train smart and have fun. Only our amateur and professional fighters do some hard sparring – but because they have to prepare for a cage fight. Safety is our number one concern.
They Offer: Brawling Time! — Many MMA schools have this misconception that the only way to learn how to fight is to put on boxing gloves and swing for the fences! This is not true… and actually can be counter-productive, besides dangerous. Many gyms also lack the technique to spar with control and spar hard to compensate for their lack of technique. Brawling during training proves nothing and only hinders the learning process and injures people. If you really want to brawl, save it for the street or in the cage.
TRIAL
We Offer: 30 Day Free Trial — 30 Days Free, Free Tshirt, Free Private Lesson, and nothing to buy or sign! Can’t beat that!
They Offer: Only One Free Class or a Pay Trial — Good luck finding another quality gym willing to give you a free month, free tshirt, and free private lesson!
GUARANTEE
We Offer: 60 Day Money Back Guarantee — What could be better than a 30 day free trial? How about a 60 Day Money Back Guarantee!
They Offer: No Guarantees — Even harder than finding a great free trial is a guarantee! We are the ONLY gym in the country to offer a money back guarantee!
SERVICE
We Offer: Great Customer Service — Above anything, this is what we take the most pride in. Our goal is to go above and beyond what you would expect from us. We are constantly trying to find new ways to please our students. It is hard to explain this because it is really the little things that makes our customer service stand out… you will notice it just from the way our staff will greet you when you arrive!
They Offer: Customer Service?.. — I didn’t say “bad customer service”… I think the question mark is more fitting… because most martial arts schools don’t seem to even know what customer service is! I’ve walked into schools and had staff stare me down like if I was walking in to challenge someone! Egos, bad attitudes, and insecurities fuel bad customer service.
What I just told you about our gym is just a very small part of what makes us unique… I could go on and on. Instead of listing a thousand things on the internet, I would much rather have you come in for yourself and try it out.

Word on the Mat!
(Here’s what other Ivey League students have to say about our programs)
“For Anyone Near Annapolis I Highly Recommend Training With Danny Ives.”
My name is Trey Wiggins and I am a BJJ blue belt as well as a US Navy Pilot. I began training Jiu Jitsu in 2005, my senior year at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. My friend and I would drive 45 minutes each way to Camp Springs just to get the chance to train under an instructor with such technical knowledge in both Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling as Danny Ives. Danny is one of the most positive and informative Jiu Jitsu instructors I have ever met. His positive attitude promotes a great learning environment and pushes people to train hard. He spread his love of the sport to me and that has pushed me to continue to train despite moving several times due to being in the military.
His instruction helped put me way ahead of all other jiu jitsu practicioners with the same amount of experience allowing me to get my blue belt in just 13 months. With him as my coach I placed 3rd in the NAGA No-gi worlds fighting 12 times and placed 1st in White Belt and 2nd in the Open at the BJJ United tournament in Philly. Even today as a Blue belt I still find myself going over my notes from his classes. He also has a geniune care for his students as we continue to keep in touch. For anyone near Annapolis I highly recommend training with Danny Ives.
