How Do True Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Classes Work? By Master Danny Ives

The Ins And Outs Of MMA Classes And Training

Many people that call my academy, Ivey League Mix Martial Arts, ask a lot of the same questions.

Three common question we get are:

“What is MMA training?”, “Is this for a beginner?” and “How do MMA classes work?”

Those are all good questions and I’m going to do my best in this blog post to answer them.

I should point out, and this is so key. YOU DON’T NEED TO HAVE EXPERIENCE TO START TAKING MMA CLASSES HERE AT IVEY LEAGUE MMA. Don’t know a darn thing? Don’t worry, we specialize in beginner classes and working with new students.

Mixed Martial Arts training or “MMA” as it’s commonly called consises of three different martial arts all rolled into one. Those are:

  • Wrestling or Takedowns
  • Muay Thai Kickboxing or Striking
  • Brazilian/Gracie Jiu Jitsu or Ground fighting

In true MMA schools like Ivy League we focus on those 3 things a lot. We do other styles like Judo, Sombo and Boxing but the main stuff we do is what I listed above.

Finding a style and class that fits you and your needs

We offer classes for MMA as a whole, which means that the classes combine everything together – Striking – Grappling and Takedowns. These are the most popular classes we offer here.

We also have singular track/style classes such as Kickboxing, Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ).

You can pick which of the classes you want to focus on depending on your individaul needs. Lets say you love to punch and kick the focus mitts but dislike ground grappling. No program! Take the Muay Thai Kickboxing classes.

Dislike punching and kickboxing? No worries, try out the BJJ classes with or without the gi. Gracie or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, whichever you choose to call it is well known for being the best style for street self defense.

I like the idea of letting the student pick what they would like to do and what makes them happiest. I think that’s what’s helped my school grow so much. A good atmosphere with nice folks and a ton of martial arts classes that fit all schedules.

Below is a great highlight video the classes we teach including kids martial arts classes.

  1. Jose says:

Great points master danny. But you know me, Muay Thai Kickboxing has always been my favorite. Letting the students pick which Mixed Martial Arts program is great, plus later on they might try one of the other MMA programs. Keep up the good work at Ivey League.
